Male Breast Reduction (liposuction) – the Technical stuff

Male breast reduction can cause the same kind of embarrassment or self-consciousness as in their female counterparts.

The majority of males with enlarged breasts have what is termed ‘Pseudo-Gynecomastia’. This is particularly so if the man carries excess body fat. Fortunately, Pseudo-Gynecomastia is usually very amenable to reduction by Tumescent liposuction.

The technique is performed under a specialised form of local anaesthetic called ‘Tumescent Anaesthesia’ (as opposed to general anaesthetic or intravenous sedatives) and has a much faster recovery time than traditional liposuction. Most patients can see some improvement of their silhouette within a week of the procedure. It can be used, not just for male breast reduction, but also in the neck, abdomen and flank.

The Encorė Cosmetic Clinic carries out male and female breast reduction using the Tumescent Liposuction technique. It is significantly less invasive than traditional surgical breast reduction methods and can be highly-effective at reducing the size of the breast.

Dr Bellaney also sometimes uses MicroAire Liposuction (MAL) when doing male breast reduction.

MAL adds an additional vibrating tip to the cannula that is inserted into the target area, which helps to loosen fat cells whilst removing them. This is very useful in treating stubborn areas where tissue is more fibrous and fat would otherwise be difficult to remove for example the upper abdomen and male breasts.

The normal male breast

Both male and female breasts contain a mixture of fat and fibrous glandular tissue (the breast tissue). Liposuction will remove the fat component of the breast, and sometimes a small excision is made to surgically remove the ‘nubbin’ of breast tissue under the nipple. It is important to note that the amount of fat in the breast varies from individual to individual. There are no investigations which can categorically tell how much fat there is in the breast. The only way to do this is by liposuction of the breast, extracting as much fat as we can. We will refund part of the fee if we are unable to obtain a significant reduction.

The majority of males with enlarged breasts have what is termed ‘Pseudo-Gynecomastia’. This is particularly so if the man carries excess body fat. Fortunately, Pseudo-Gynecomastia is usually very amenable to reduction by Tumescent liposuction. However, True Gynecomastia is increased breast size, caused not by an increase in fat, but an increase in glandular tissue. It is not common and is usually not responsive to liposuction. It is usually caused by medical conditions or by some medications.

We specialise in tumescent liposuction which is highly effective at male breast reduction and improving the shape of other parts of the body such as the buttocks and abdomen.
