Redness and Blotchiness
What if there was a treatment that could slow the ageing process and keep you looking ‘forever young’ – we may have the answer for you…
Forever Young BBLTM is an innovative IPL technology that uniquely delivers light therapy to the skin, targeting the signs of ageing and sun damage.
IPL or Intense Pulsed Light technology has been around for decades, but the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic’s Sciton® BBL machine has been described by world experts as the “Rolls Royce of IPL machines”.
It is the only IPL device on the market that has been proven to reverse the ageing genes in the skin! A Stanford University study has confirmed this. Because of this, the skin of many treated patients actually maintains or improves its appearance despite the passage of time.
Our Forever Young BBLTM treatments, using the top quality Sciton® BBL machine, effectively provide a more refreshed, rejuvenated and youthful appearance.
What conditions can be targeted by Forever Young BBLTM?
The treatment reduces the long-term signs of skin ageing in a natural-looking way, including:
- broken vessels
- age spots
- fine lines and wrinkles.
It can also help with acne and uneven skin texture.
The targeted process restores your skin to its natural beauty, blending its natural colours and making it smoother, vibrant and younger looking.
Redness & Blotchiness
Redness, blotchiness, blushing or flushing of the face can be caused by a variety of underlying diseases, disorders and conditions. Some causes of facial redness can be more permanent such as those caused by rosacea, acne and eczema, and allergic and inflammatory conditions. Commonly, particularly in New Zealand, chronic exposure to sun and wind will cause the development of fine blood vessels on the face.
BBL will treat both superficial and deeper blood vessels. As long as these small vessels are visible, the BBL should be able to treat them and consequently improve your redness.
Studies have shown that approximately 80-90% of patients have significant or complete clearance of their facial redness with Sciton® BBL treatment.
What makes the Sciton® BBL the “Rolls Royce of IPL’s”?
Our Sciton® BBL machine is a top end medical-grade IPL machine. It is only available in medical rooms, and our specialist dermatology rooms have the only Sciton® BBL in Christchurch.
It uses Broadband Light (BBLTM) and has many features that maximise its success whilst minimising side effects.
BBL energy allows us to precisely treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, and many other skin conditions.
How does Forever Young BBLTM work?
The light energy delivered by the BBL is absorbed by the targeted areas, for example blood vessels or freckles. This light energy eliminates fine vessels that cause redness and reduces unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions. In addition, this treatment stimulates your skin cells to generate new collagen.
The number of treatments needed will vary from patient to patient. Your treatment is tailored to match your skin type and desired results. Generally three to five treatments will be required at two or three week intervals. Once this initial ‘corrective course’ is completed, a single treatment every 6 months or so should result in maintenance or continued improvement in your skin – keeping it ‘forever young’.
The procedure is gentle, non-invasive and safe. A cool gel is first applied to the treatment area, then a chilled applicator is placed on the skin to deliver the light therapy. The treatment is not generally painful, but in more sensitive areas you may experience some discomfort. Sometimes we will use topical anaesthetic in these areas.
There is virtually no downtime after treatment and in most cases you can apply make-up immediately. However, you may be sensitive to sunlight after treatment and should apply sunscreen and other skin care products as directed by your doctor. Some redness and slight swelling of the treated areas can sometimes occur for a few days after treatment. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions after your Forever Young BBLTM treatment.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Botox® and Dysport® (both forms of Botulinum Toxin A) are commonly used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. Other lines can also be treated.
At the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic, we also use Botox® and Dysport® to soften neck or lip lines and sometimes treat excessive sweating.
It is a quick, safe procedure requiring no local anaesthetic. It causes minimal pain and has no serious side-effects.
How do Botox® and Dysport® work?
Treatment is simple and involves the injection of botulinum toxin (Botox® and Dysport® are trade names for this toxin) into the targeted area.
The procedure is quick and uses a very fine needle (really it is like a small pin) in several specific locations. Pain associated with these injections is minimal and no local anaesthetic is required.
Treatment is very safe if performed in expert hands. Dr Bellaney has been performing Botox® treatments since 1996, making him one of the most experienced practitioners of Botox® in the country. Our practice team use both Dysport and Botox® in our clinic. In practice they are both very similar in effectiveness and longevity. Some patients find they prefer Botox whilst others prefer Dysport. It does seem that in some patients Dysport is slightly more effective, whilst in others Botox is seen as more effective. Having both products available gives our patients more choice.
The initial treatment usually lasts three to four months. Subsequent treatments tend to last longer and, in most people, last four to six months. Thus generally only two to three treatments are required each year to maintain the results.
The treatment has no serious side effects. Unwanted side effects such as slightly droopy eyelids, are rare and always temporary.
Dermal fillers are an increasingly popular treatment to help smooth out wrinkles and lines and increase volume in the face.
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar that is found in our skin. Its main role is to attract water and provide hydration to the skin. However, as we age, the amount of Hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring sugar in our skin) diminishes. This contributes significantly to the loss of volume in our faces, as well as the development of wrinkles.
The dermal fillers we use at the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic are synthetically made to resemble the body’s natural Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Placing them in the skin helps replace the volume that has been lost – improving wrinkles and adding volume and youthfulness back into your face.
Injectable dermal fillers are a quick and effective treatment option. They can be used to add volume to your face (enhancing lips, cheeks, under the eyes, chins, along the jawline and forehead), improve wrinkles and increase the skin’s smoothness, elasticity and firmness.
At the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic, we have more than 10 years’ experience in using different types of Hyaluronic Acid-based fillers.
Perlane®, Restylane® and Emervel® are the fillers we use at our clinic.
We prefer these fillers as they are made by a longstanding, reputable company and we believe are the best Hyaluronic Acid fillers available. They are very competitively priced. A comprehensive review of the literature has shown that Hyaluronic Acid fillers are the safest type of fillers on the market, with a lower complication rate than other filler types.
The fillers the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic uses are prescription only and can only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional in New Zealand.
Our health professionals will discuss with you the various benefits of the different types of fillers.
What does treatment involve?
Treatment takes around 15-20 minutes. The filler is injected below the skin’s surface. A very fine needle, combined with the local anaesthetic in these products minimises discomfort during the treatment. Most patients are able to tolerate the treatment without other forms of anaesthetic.
At the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic we offer a range of Laser Facial Rejuvenation treatments to refresh the skin and help achieve a more youthful look.
Laser Facial Rejuvenation is a non-surgical method of skin tightening that uses light energy to instantly remove the top layers of the skin. The depth of skin removed can be altered according to the patient’s requirements and available ‘downtime’.
The Encorė Cosmetic Clinic has the only Sciton® tuneable Erbium laser in Christchurch. Treatment with the Sciton® tuneable Erbium laser means the procedure can be individually tailored to the nature of the problem the patient wishes to correct.
We use the Sciton® Erbium Laser™ for treatment of:
- facial lines and wrinkles – mild to deep
- blemishes – particularly brown marks on the face, neck or hands
- skin texture and tone and elasticity
- acne scars.
We offer three different depths of laser peels:
NanoLaserPeel ‘Microdermabrasion’– also called “the modern lunchtime peel” – this is a superficial depth treatment. This is comparable to the microdermabrasion available at many beauty clinics but our tunable laser allows us to be very precise in the depth of peel we achieve. It is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with little downtime, used for improving the overall appearance of your skin. The procedure is performed in our medical centre and can be custom tailored to your specific skin conditions and desired outcome.
At its shallowest setting NanoLaserPeel treatment can be tolerated by most people with no anaesthetic at all. At its deeper settings a topical numbing cream is typically used.
MicroLaserPeels – also called “the weekend peel” – this is a medium depth treatment. These peels typically give the skin a much healthier glow and improvement in the skin’s texture and complexion. Unlike the nanolaser peel these peels can also improve fine lines and wrinkles – especially with repeated use. A topical anaesthetic is usually required. Most skin areas can be treated. Popular treatment areas are the face and neck, although the chest and hands can also be treated using this technique
Deeper Erbium Laser peel – This type of peel gives the most dramatic results of all peels. It can result in striking improvements in even deep wrinkles. It also results in significant tightening of the skin and will generally make peoples skin appear 5-10 years younger. At the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic we are able to use our expertise on Tumescent anaesthesia to perform this peel safely and comfortably without a general anaesthetic.
Shallow lines and wrinkles and can be tackled effectively with TriFractional Radiofrequency Resurfacing (or TRF), which is a non-surgical method of skin tightening.
At the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic we use Maximus® TriFractional Resurfacing – recommended for mild to moderate skin tightening, with no downtime.
For more significant skin tightening, see Laser Facial Rejuvenating to find out more.
Maximus® TriFractional Resurfacing
TriFractional Radiofrequency (TRF) is a less aggressive treatment than laser resurfacing. It is used for reducing fine lines and wrinkles without little or no disturbance to the top layer of the skin, and can be used to improve the appearance of stretch marks. Radiofrequency is a form of electrical energy oscillating in the frequency range of 300 kHz – 1MHz.
Face need a refresh?
Chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands.
A solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel. The skin that regenerates is usually smoother and rejuvenated, with reduced fine lines and wrinkles.
At the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic we offer:
Glycolic Refresher Peels. These peels give the skin a healthier glow and, with repeated peels, skin tone and complexion are, invariably, significantly improved. These peels are very superficial. They usually only cause mild redness, thus they don’t necessitate any time off work. These peels are best performed every four to six weeks.
These peels are performed using a fruit acid called glycolic acid. As we are a specialist clinic, we are able to use stronger strengths of these acids than are usually available through beauty therapy clinics. However, the effect of these peels is maintained longer in clients who also have regular peels at their beauticians. In addition, continued use of these peels may also result in mild improvement of wrinkles.
Laser Peels – Our Sciton tunable Erbium laser allows us to offer very precise depth peels. The use of this laser has replaced a number of chemical peels we used to perform.
We can perform superficial to deep peels with this laser. See Laser Facial Rejuvenation to find out more.
Peels at the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic are administered by our expert team and the effects are usually safe and predictable.
A MACS Lift and Volume Facelift performed at the Encorė Cosmetic Clinic, will leave your face looking fresher and more youthful.
MACS (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) is one of the safest, most popular lifting techniques in the world. It is a procedure that lifts the lower part of the face and the upper neck.
The treatment is particularly effective in improving excess jowling and improving the jawline, as well as improving the lines and grooves running between the nose and mouth. It can also target wrinkles and saggy skin near the cheek bones.
Ageing, sun exposure, and even smoking, can cause facial changes in the cheek areas, as well as below the eyes, temple and forehead. A MACS Facelift offers patients many advantages and benefits over other procedures.
The procedure is ideal for women between 30 and 60 years of age, or for those who’ve previously had a full facelift that requires a ‘touch up’. It requires no general anaesthetic and generally has a fast post-op recovery.
Some patients may benefit further from having an autologous fat transfer or fillers (the so called ‘Liquid facelift) injected at the same time as having a MACS Facelift to gain maximum improvement in their facial appearance.
A well-executed MACS Facelift will tighten much of your facial skin and leave you looking fresher with a more youthful appearance.
If you think a MACS Facelift could be a suitable option for you, please contact Dr Bellaney’s rooms for a consultation.
Sciton® BBL Hair Reduction is Encorė Cosmetic Clinic’s premium hair removal service.
This is a revolutionary technology in hair removal and is one of our most popular treatments. It provides a treatment that is safe, fast, efficient and comfortable.
Encorė Cosmetic Clinic’s Sciton® BBLTM (Broadband Light) machine has been described by world experts as the “Rolls Royce of IPL machines”.
How does Sciton® BBL Hair Reduction work?
The BBL hair removal system uses multiple wavelengths of light, transmitted in broadband light form through the laser. With its broad spectrum light, the BBL is able to target the hair at its roots. The melanin deneposits at the root will attract and retain the light once it hits, trapping its energy until it converts to heat to destroy the hair from the root.
We generally recommend five to seven treatments, spaced six or seven weeks apart, for the best results. Thereafter, maintenance treatments may be required once or twice a year.
The technical stuff
The thermoelectrically cooled sapphire plate on the Sciton® BBL hand piece provides continuous cooling, even at maximum power, to keep the skin cool and comfortable before, during and after treatment.
Because the system relies on using the melanin to do its work for it, it is most effective on lighter skin patients. Patients with darker skin tones have a higher degree of melanin pigment in their skin, and while it would be effective, they run a risk of their skin ‘overheating’ with this treatment and causing skin discolouration.
Laser or light energy is selectively absorbed by the melanin in hair follicles and converted to heat, diffusing to and injuring the hair follicle. Effective hair reduction can only be achieved during the growth phase and hair reduction is considered permanent when a significant amount of hair does not return for a period of time longer than the complete growth cycle. After a series of treatments, most hair is permanently reduced in size, quantity and colouration. However, if hair does regrow it should be finer and lighter than before.
